One-to-one dog training: pros and cons

One-to-one dog training is a convenient way to train your dog, but is it effective? In this post, I’ll briefly discuss whether it’s worth training your dog on a one-to-one basis, and we’ll look at various scenarios that are more or less effective.

5 Advantages of One-to-One Dog Training

Let’s start with the advantages, as everyone wants to succeed in training their dog, whether it’s just a family pet or a working dog.

  1. One-to-one training undoubtedly allows more time for the handler and their dog.
  2. One-to-one training with a trainer gives the dog owner more freedom. Some people feel self-conscious about working in a group and do not like being judged. In such cases, this form of training is the ideal solution.
  3. One-to-one training allows for more time to practise and to correct mistakes.
  4. It offers greater scope for teaching the owner how to become a good dog handler.
  5. The opportunity to teach the dog exercises before the owner becomes the handler

Disadvantages

  1. No opportunity for the dog to socialise with other dogs
  2. Often, the owner does not wish to become the handler, which makes the training ineffective in the long term
  3. It sometimes happens that the dog obeys the trainer but no longer obeys the owner

Summary

Individual training is a good option if the owner is aware of the amount of effort required to be put into the dog and into owner-dog training sessions. During such training, the trainer will certainly have more time to devote to both the dog and the owner. It is easy to address any issues that arise and respond quickly to behavioural mistakes so that the dog does not suffer as a result. One-to-one dog training is also a good option for people who value working one-on-one with an instructor and want to be sure that the knowledge gained during the training will be put to good use during owner-dog training sessions.

I recommend this approach to working with your dog for both obedience and protection training.
