Cane Corso training – from fear to confidence

Psy

Training a Cane Corso is undoubtedly quite a challenge, particularly when the dog is timid, fearful and, as a result, displays nervous or even aggressive behaviour. Is it worth training such a dog? Of course it is. During some of the defence exercises (before serious defence training begins), it is possible to redirect the way the dog channels its emotions towards greater calm and emotional stability. Of course, this is a long and arduous process, but it is well worth undertaking under the guidance of an experienced dog trainer.

Training a Cane Corso and building confidence

Many people choose a Cane Corso because they are beautiful and majestic; others choose them for their strength; and still others want a wonderful friend and protector. Whilst every dog will be a wonderful friend, not every dog will be a protector. At least not straight away. Most Cane Corsos I’ve come across were timid and needed their confidence built up.

First training session with a timid dog

You can achieve a great deal during the first training session with such a dog. From an intimidated dog to one that interacts with the person it was afraid of just an hour earlier. These kinds of training sessions must be repeated until confidence is built up and the timidity visibly subsides. There is no golden rule, as every dog is different and each has its own history, but it is undoubtedly worth the effort.

Today’s training

First of all, I’d like to thank Kasia for agreeing to let me publish a video clip from today’s training session on the blog. This was our first training session together, and I hope we’ll continue because, as you can see from the attached video, it’s well worth it. Training a Cane Corso isn’t the easiest thing, but it’s very rewarding.

At the moment, we’re working on building confidence, and perhaps in time we’ll start doing more advanced exercises focused on defence.
