Training Session No. 4 – Dutch Shepherd
Training session number 4, as you’re no doubt already aware, involves working on selecting the correct leg, as well as continuing to improve the quality of the grip and the recall. For a dog that naturally tends to grip the leg vertically, positioning the head correctly whilst gripping can be quite a challenge. Sometimes it happens that it is easier to position the head correctly whilst biting on one leg but more difficult on the other. For some dogs, this is a transitional phase and the correct positioning develops over time, provided that the helper understands the problem and knows how to correct it. In extreme cases, this may be due to genetic factors (it is worth working on).
Varied Training
With a dog of this age and such a rapidly developing temperament, training can be expanded to include further elements, the benefits of which will only become apparent in a month or two. A major advantage – and a pleasant surprise – is how quickly the dog learns to release the dummy on command.
I can confidently say that both yesterday’s and today’s training sessions were successful, although not every moment was perfect. At the moment, we’re managing to follow the planned development path for this dog. I must also praise the handler, as he’s starting to work with the dog better and better, which, as you can see in the attached videos, is yielding good results.
Training Summary
We’re making steady progress towards our goals. Working on the grip, releasing on command, and positioning the head correctly for biting are just some of the things that need to be practised regularly. More exercises will be added soon, which we’ll be reporting on. Only on our website can you see genuine, regular dog training in its purest form. See you soon.
